Degradable Agreement with Hybrid Faults ( An Algorithm and Reliability - Safety Analysis )
نویسنده
چکیده
Achieving traditional Byzantine agreement in the presence of arbitrary faults requires that the total number of nodes be larger than three times the number of faulty nodes. Two approaches have been proposed in the literature to circumvent this requirement: (i) hybrid fault model approach 4, 7] considers three types of faults of varying degree of severity, and (ii) degradable agreement approach 10, 11] relaxes the deenition of agreement in the presence of excessive faults. This report combines the above two approaches and presents a degradable agreement algorithm for the hybrid fault model. The report deenes and evaluates reliability and safety measures for the proposed degradable agreement algorithm and concludes that degradable agreement can be used to trade reliability with safety. It is shown that the hybrid fault model results in better algorithms (with respect to reliability and/or safety) only when the probability of arbitrary faults is not very small.

Degradable Byzantine Agreement
Consider a system consisting of a sender that wants to send a value to certain receivers. Byzantine agreement protocols [2, 7, 8] have been proposed to achieve this in the presence of arbitrary failures. The imposed requirement typically is that the fault-free receivers must all agree on the same value [7, 8]. (Dolev [2] analyzes a somewhat weaker form of agreement). It has been shown that such...
متن کاملFormal Verification of Hybrid Byzantine Agreement Under Link Faults
We describe an extended fault model for Byzantine Agreement due to Schmid and Weiss. The new fault model extends the previous “hybrid” fault model of Thambidurai and Park by the addition of omission-faulty nodes, and by the introduction of link faults. We formally verify the Hybrid Oral Messages Algorithm (OMH) under this new fault model. Our formal verification improves the analysis of Schmid ...

This study establishes an efficient algorithm for resolving highly nonlinear structural reliability problems. To this end, first a numerical nonlinear optimization algorithm with a new simple filter is defined to locate and estimate the most ...
متن کاملA HYBRID SUPPORT VECTOR REGRESSION WITH ANT COLONY OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM IN ESTIMATION OF SAFETY FACTOR FOR CIRCULAR FAILURE SLOPE
Slope stability is one of the most complex and essential issues for civil and geotechnical engineers, mainly due to life and high economical losses resulting from these failures. In this paper, a new approach is presented for estimating the Safety Factor (SF) for circular failure slope using hybrid support vector regression (SVR) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). The ACO is combined with the S...
